The helmet no one wants! B'luru cops register 2 lakh cases in 2022

Bengaluru: An increasing number of youngsters in Bengaluru consider wearing a helmet a 'headache.' So much so that 2,25,585 cases were registered in 2022 for helmetless driving in the city.
This number is up from 1,95,000 cases in 2021 and 1,75,000 cases in 2020, says an unamused Bengaluru traffic police department.
And why do young adults aged 20-30 shy away from wearing helmets or use half helmets?
The common response is, "I don't want to carry around such a big heavy helmet" even if it means inviting danger while riding without proper protective gear.
There are also other reasons why young adults choose not to wear helmets. Some believe that helmets are uncomfortable to wear or inconvenient. However, the fact is that helmets can save lives.
According to the World Health Organisation, helmets can reduce the risk of death by up to 40% in motorcycle crashes. They can also reduce the risk of severe head injuries by up to 70%.
