Bengaluru, Nov.11

Bengaluru is going to experience heavy rains for another 48 hours, and will record from 64.5 to 115.5 mm of rain per hour. On Thursday, the city experienced thunderstorms with scattered heavy to very heavy rains with isolated extremely heavy rain, causing traffic to back up across the city.

The Met Department has sounded an orange alert in the city and other neighbouring seven districts including Bengaluru Rural and Bengaluru Urban, Chikkaballapura, Chitradurga, Kolar and Tumkur districts. While other districts apart from Mysore, Mandya, Hassan, Chamarajanagar, Ramnagar, Shivamogga and Kodagu districts are on yellow alert.

Speaking to News Trail, Geeta Agnihotri, head of India Meteorological Department, Bengaluru said: ‘’the rains are likely to increase over the city as the system is moving close to Tamil Nadu coast on November 10, and from November 11 to 15. Cloudy conditions with continuous rains are likely over the city,”

“The low pressure area over southeast & adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal has concentrated into a depression at 1730 hours IST of 10th Nov,. over southwest Bay of Bengal. The depression over southwest Bay of Bengal moved westnorthwestward with a speed of 04 kmph during the past six hours and lay centred at 0830 hrs IST on 11th November 2021, over southwest & adjoining west central Bay of Bengal, near Lat. 12.3°N and Long. 81.2°E, about 130 km east-southeast of Chennai and 150 km east-northeast of Puducherry. It is very likely to continue to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu & adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts during the evening of today, the 11th November 2021”, said the Met report.

Rains have caused major problems like waterlogging, traffic congestion, flooding and a hike in the price of various essentials including vegetables. The torrential rains lashed some parts of Bengaluru in recent days, resulting in waterlogging and uprooting of trees. Many neighbourhoods in the low-lying areas are under water.

The worst affected areas are Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Vishveshwarapuram, Lakkasandra, Gottigere, Nagarabavi and Kengeri. Vehicles in the basement of some apartments remain submerged. “The continuous light drizzle in the city has led to this havoc so one can imagine what the impact of heavy rains are going to be, “ a resident said.
