Bengaluru: After much delay, the Terminal-2 of the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in the city will start handling International flights from September 12, Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) said in an announcement.

Due preparations are being made and a smooth transition is expected, unlike previous attempts, BIAL added.

"Starting from 10:45 am on September 12, all international flight operations at Bengaluru airport will take place from Terminal-2 and the old Terminal-1 will be used for domestic air operations," a spokesperson for BIAL said on Sunday following a notification for the same.

Earlier, BIAL planned to transform Bengaluru Airport’s Terminal 2 into a fully international terminal starting from September 1.

However, it was postponed at the last minute on August 31 much to the disappointment of the passengers. A few domestic airlines have been operating here since the day of its opening in January this year.

Last November, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the new terminal at Bengaluru airport. The terminal was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 13,000 crore and it has a builtup area of roughly 2.55 lakh square metres.

Another 4.41 lakh square metres will be added to the terminal during the second phase. The first phase of the new terminal is expected to serve 25 million passengers a year.
