
BCP launches 'Cyber tip a day keeps the fraudsters away' campaign

Bengaluru: In a bid to raise awareness among the citizens regarding the cyber frauds, Bengaluru Police Commissioner on Tuesday launched a campaign, "Cyber tip a day keeps the fraudsters away," on his official X (previously Twitter) handle.
"As cyber crime cases are increasing both in Karnataka and in other states of the country, it is very important to stay alert and safe while using digital services. As per reports, every third person in the country falls prey to cyber frauds which operate in one form or the other," Police Commissioner B Dayanada said.
He also said that most of the victims have lost their hard-earned money to online extortionists. A total of Rs 363 cr was lost to cyber crimes in Karnataka in 2022, compared to Rs 145 crore in 2021, according to data from the state home department.
Karnataka reported 12,551 cyber crime cases in 2022 while in 2021, the state reported 8,132 cases.
In 2022, Bengaluru alone lost nearly Rs 266 cr with the police managing to recover only Rs 46.87 crore or 12 percent of the total stolen funds in the state.
