Bengaluru: With the introduction of the vehicle scrap policy in Karnataka, the Karnataka government has ordered phase-by-phase scrapping of government-owned vehicles that have completed 15 years on the basis of priority and use.

According to the order issued by the Transport Department, priority should be given to destroying the vehicles that have completed the most years.

The public has been exempted from the collection of fines for the cases registered under the legislation of the Transport Department and the cases registered under the traffic rules of the Police Department in the last one year on the vehicles intended to be destroyed voluntarily.

This exemption has also been made applicable only for a period of one year from the date of issue of the order. The order was issued on a proposal submitted by the Transport and Road Safety Commissioner.

Renewal of registration certificate of government vehicles beyond 15 years is recommended and such vehicles need to be compulsorily destroyed as per Central Motor Vehicles Rules.

The Central Government has directed to waive the outstanding liabilities on destroyed vehicles for a onetime period limited to one year. Also, the central government has set an incentive of Rs 200 crore for scrapping old vehicles.

Accordingly, if the state government also completes the targets set in the first mines store, the central government will provide an incentive grant of one hundred crores, sources said.

The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari had earlier called upon all stakeholders to come forward and support the Vehicle Scrapping policy.

For private vehicles:

The scrappage policy came into effect from December 30, 2022 in the state. The government has approved setting up of a vehicle scrapping centre by Mahindra MSTC Recycling Private Limited at Vijayapura in Devanahalli taluk.

According to sources, the order came into effect from September 14 and vehicle owners who wish to scrap their old vehicles can approach the facility.

Vehicle owners who scrap their vehicles at the registered vehicle scrapping centre will get a Certificate of Destruction which can be used to avail of discounts when buying a new vehicle. The vehicles to be scrapped should not have any police cases or traffic fines pending.

Vehicles older than 15 year and cause pollution should be scrapped. In the coming days, the state government plans to open two registered vehicle scrapping centres, one at Koratagere in Tumakuru district and another in Koppal district
