Pedestrianisation plan on Gandhi Bazaar main road abandoned

Bengaluru: The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) initiated a pedestrianisation project on Gandhi Bazaar Main Road, initially part of a broader infrastructure plan, now considered a traffic management effort.

However, due to vehement opposition from residents and traders, the civic body has discontinued the project. The reduction in road width by nearly half has had a substantial adverse impact on local businesses, leading traders to express their anxieties.

Allegedly, this process violated a high court order, as it involved footpath construction against the court's directives. Furthermore, inaccurate survey data exacerbated the situation, misrepresenting the number of houses in the area, resulting in problems.

The expanded footpaths, now spanning 30-40 feet on each side, have allocated entrance space to 70-80% of people, as per the high court's instructions.

Consequently, several businesses have vacated buildings along the road due to these challenges.
