Bengaluru: A 24-year-old man was arrested by the Halasuru Gate Police for allegedly cheating unemployed youths by promising false placements in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

The police identified the accused as Harsha, a resident of Jambusavari Dinne in JP Nagar here. It was learnt that he was working as a contract-based employee in the BBMP war room during the Covid pandemic.

The police said that the accused was unemployed after the contract ended and was looking for an easy way to make money. "He posed himself as a BBMP official and boasted of his 'high-profile' contacts at the office to lure gullible people," the police said.

When several people approached him for his "reference" to apply for a job at BBMP, he falsely offered them the job of Marshals and took Rs 3000 from each candidate.

According to the police, the accused had trapped over 200 aspirants in the same manner and had also issued fake appointment letters to them. The fraud came to light when one of the victims, Sandeep L, went to the BBMP office with the appointment letter and realized that it was fake.
