Bengaluru: In order to regulate dog ownership in Bengaluru, the Animal Husbandry Department of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is set to formulate a comprehensive set of guidelines aimed at regulating dog ownership across eight zones here.

According to sources, the new regulations are expected to be released by the end of this year aiming to strike a balance between the rights of dog owners and the concerns of affected neighbours, as well as to enhance the well-being of the dogs themselves.

To many residents, owning a dog brings joy. However, this also comes with its share of challenges such as providing adequate nutrition to dogs, facilitating training and exercises to keep them active, maintaining proper hygiene, along with avoiding inconveniences for neighbours.

Sources said that the BBMP's Animal Husbandry Department is preparing to introduce guidelines that will establish a defined limit on the number of dogs a household can have.

The department may also set conditions for responsible dog ownership to ensure neighbours are not disturbed. Additionally, the proposed guidelines will strictly forbid the confinement of dogs in attics.

Distinct guidelines for dog rearing will also be implemented to cater to the unique needs of both pet dogs and their owners. Dr Ravikumar, Joint Director of the BBMP Animal Department, acknowledges the concerns raised by citizens and emphasizes the need for guidelines to maintain peace between the neighborhoods in the city.

Further adding, he said, “Responsible pet ownership is a key factor in ensuring the well-being of both pets and their communities.”

Recognising the significance of adopting and caring for stray dogs, the BBMP is currently in the process of developing a project aimed at promoting responsible ownership and effectively managing the city's stray dog population.
