Bengaluru: A catastrophe was narrowly avoided on Monday when a nursery school building managed by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in the city collapsed before the classes began.
According to residents, the English medium nursery school, situated on Cooks Road in the Shivajinagar locality, has an enrollment of 90 children despite its dilapidated condition.
With 70-80 nursery students attending classes daily, the building’s collapse during school hours could have resulted in a colossal tragedy.
The residents said that the building collapsed around 3:10 am in the morning. The jurisdictional police rushed to the spot and inspected the damages caused due to the building collapse.
Several BBMP officials along with the personnel cleared the debris using JCB machines. Local residents have criticized the authorities for running the nursery school in a dilapidated building, posing a grave danger to the children for so many years.
The residents claimed that they had complained to the authorities and the BBMP officials on several occasions but they allegedly kept on delaying the renovation of the building.
A car, four two-wheelers and a luggage carrier were damaged in the incident.
