Appoint chair to state women’s commission, AAP tells State govt

Bengaluru: The women's wing of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) condemned the Congress State government for not appointing a chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Women (KSCW) even six months after coming to power and demanded that the same be done right away.

Women protesters from AAP made the demand while staging a demonstration near the Mysore Bank Circle in Bengaluru on Monday.

They made a special mention of a woman being stripped and assaulted near Belagavi even as the winter session took place in the city recently.

The woman had been stripped naked, paraded, tied to an electricity pole and beaten up in Hosa Vantamuri in Belagavi taluk.

The motive behind the incident appears to be the fact that the son of the woman had eloped with a girl from the mob’s family. Both the boy and the girl come from the same Scheduled Tribe (ST) community.

The girl is said to have eloped because she was supposed to be engaged to someone else in the near future.

As many as seven people have been arrested and Kakati Police Station is handling the case.

The ghastly incident has come as a shock to many as the Houses have convened for the winter session at the Suvarna Soudha near Belagavi city.

Guarantee our safety: Party

AAP Bengaluru city women's unit President Veena Rao said that the State government providing Rs 2,000 monthly to women under the Gruha Lakshmi scheme meant little when they lacked basic safety.

“Violence against women in Belagavi is very inhumane. The Congress government is doing a drama of paying Rs 2,000 to women every month. It neglected women's safety in the state."
