Mysuru: The University of Mysore Academic Council members on Wednesday opposed the state government move on conducting a unified PhD entrance test for all universities spread across the state.
The varsity has decided to write a letter to the state government and state higher education department opposing the unified PhD entrance test.
A decision to this effect was taken at the second academic council meeting held at its Vignan Bhavan auditorium in the city.
As soon as the meeting began, Varsity Academic council member D Anand alleged that the unified PhD admission test is an attack on the autonomy of the varsity.
He appealed to the state government to stop interferring in the university administration stating it is detrimental to the interests of students studying in the university.
The other members who were present at the meeting also opposed this decision. Vice chancellor Prof N Lokanath who chaired the meeting said that he had already conveyed his decision to the state government at the recently held vice chancellors meeting convened by the state government.
He said that he had appealed to the state government to fill vacant permanent teaching posts pending in all universities in Karnataka which must produce quality research before introducing such a system.
He said that most universities were forced to reduce the intake of PhD scholars due to an acute shortage of regular faculty members.
