403 Indian students' deaths abroad since 2018: Canada tops list, says external affairs minister

Bengaluru: The government informed Lok Sabha on February 2 that a total of 403 incidents of the death of Indian students abroad have been reported since 2018.

These incidents resulted from various causes, including natural causes, accidents, and medical conditions.

Canada leads the list with 91 cases, followed by 48 in the UK, according to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

He emphasised that the welfare of Indian students abroad is a top priority for the government. Jaishankar stated, "As per the information available with the ministry, 403 incidents of the death of Indian students abroad have been reported since 2018 due to various reasons including natural causes, accidents, and medical conditions."

He made this statement in response to a query about the safety of Indian students abroad, assuring that Indian missions/posts abroad promptly address any issues faced by Indian students.

Furthermore, Jaishankar provided a breakdown of country-wise details of deaths of Indian students since 2018.

The data indicated 91 deaths in Canada, 48 in the UK, 40 in Russia, 36 in the US, 35 in Australia, 21 in Ukraine, and 20 in Germany. Additionally, statistics revealed 14 deaths in Cyprus, 10 each in the Philippines and Italy, and nine each in Qatar, China, and Kyrgyzstan.
