B'luru woman loses Rs 34,200 trying to obtain online 'Ramadan Gifts'

Bengaluru: A 29-year-old woman techie lost Rs 34,200 while trying to obtain free ration and cash cards offered by a fraudulent online organisation as 'Ramadan Gifts.'

As per the complaint filed with the cyber police, the victim had received a text message from an unidentified number claiming to distribute cash cards and free rations for selected people in the month of Ramadan.

Falling for the trick, the victim contacted the number but was redirected to two other contact numbers in order to avail the 'gifts.'

An unidentified person claiming to be in Dubai, instructed her to submit a few details and pay a small amount as registration charge. However later they called her and lured her into transferring Rs 34,200 in total.

It was too late by the time the woman realised that she had been duped. Based on her complaint, the police have registered an FIR against the unidentified persons under Information Technology Act 2008 sec 66C (Punishment for identity theft), 66D ( Punishment for cheating by impersonation by using computer resource) and the IPC Sec 419 (Punishment for cheating by impersonation) and Sec 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property).

The Bengaluru Cyber Police and Banashankari Police are further investigating the case.
