Restore Babri, Gujarat in NCERT syllabus, says student org

Bengaluru: All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) claimed that the ruling BJP at the Centre had removed subjects like the Babri Masjid demolition of 1992 and the Gujarat communal violence of 2002 from the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) political science syllabus, demanding that the subjects be retained.

AIDSO State Secretary Ajay Kamath claimed that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government had deliberately removed these events in an attempt to paint a rosy picture of the country.

“The ruling BJP continues to attack education by implementing one policy or another. Now many subjects like Babri Masjid, Hindutva politics, Gujarat riots have been undemocratically removed from the 12th class political science syllabus of NCERT. The issue of Gujarat riots is completely left out of the lesson on ‘democratic rights’. In the lesson ‘Recent Developments in Indian Politics’, the Babri Masjid aspect is left out and more attention is given to topics surrounding Ram Janmabhoomi,” Kamath said.

“Apart from this, many corrections have been made throughout the text regarding the minority community. Many corrections were also made in history and sociology books. Many images depicting communal riots are also omitted from the text. This move is against the scientific, secular and democratic values upheld by the revolutionaries of the freedom struggle and the pioneers of the Renaissance movement. AIDSO demands that these amendments be dropped immediately and the facts re-inserted into the text,” he added.
