No overspeeding on Bengaluru Airport Road, traffic cops set speed limit

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: In a bid to curb increasing road accidents on Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) Road particularly due to over-speeding by motorists and two-wheeler riders, Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) have issued guidelines to prevent traffic violations.

On Tuesday, BTP officials said that speed detection cameras have been set up along the Bengaluru Airport road using which they can spot overspeeding motorists. Such 'speedsters' will be fined automatically from now on, they said.

The legal speed limit allowed on the KIA road stretch is 80 km per hour. Those who cross this limit will be fined for over-speeding.

With 1.4 crore residents, Bengaluru has the greatest traffic density in any Indian metropolis with 827 vehicles per 1000 persons.

The number of vehicles is increasing at an exponential rate in the city. In 2023, there were 914 fatalities from accidents and in the first two months of 2024, 174 fatalities have been reported. Of the 914 fatalities in 2023, 74 per cent were those riding twowheelers, while 21 per cent involved pedestrians.

Reports say that approximately 60 per cent of those impacted were 60 years or even older. According to these reports, the elevated corridor's high speeds contributed to nearly 10 per cent of the overall deaths in Devanahalli. Kengeri followed next with the inclusion of NICE Road.
