BMTC sees surge in bus distance covered
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Amidst a surge in private vehicle ownership in the city, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has observed an increase in the distance covered by its buses. Data reveals that BMTC buses travelled an average of 203 km per day during the 2023- 24 period, compared to 186 km the previous year.
This expansion in distance covered can be credited to various strategic initiatives implemented by BMTC authorities. Notably, extending regular shift hours from 8 to 10 to 11 p.m. and deploying buses on long-distance routes have contributed to this positive trajectory.
BMTC officials highlight that extending shift hours, coupled with offering additional wages for overtime, has enabled optimal vehicle utilisation. Moreover, the operation of e-buses during extended hours has further enhanced efficiency.
The availability of longer routes spanning 50-60 km has also been instrumental in maximising bus usage. Despite the number of private vehicles in the city, surpassing the 1 crore mark, the growth in BMTC’s fleet has not kept pace.
Presently, the corporation operates 6,100 buses, including recently introduced e-buses. However, with current congestion, particularly evident in traffic hotspots like Central Silk Board, Hebbal, Tin Factory, Sarakki, and Gorguntepalya, challenges persist for bus operations.
Nonetheless, efforts are underway to navigate these obstacles and ensure efficient public transportation services amidst the city’s changing landscape.
