B'luru couple’s 'zero-waste wedding' garners attention for eco-friendly celebrations

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Dr Poorvi Bhat of Bengaluru has captivated online audiences with her eco-conscious "zero-waste wedding," showcasing a sustainable approach to tying the knot while honouring the environment.

In a viral Instagram video, Dr Bhat shared glimpses of her wedding, attributing its success to the collaborative efforts of both families. The video, garnering nearly eight million views, highlighted the innovative and eco-friendly choices made for the ceremony.

The wedding mandap, crafted from sugarcane and later used as cow feed, and the utilisation of banana leaves and stainless steel cutlery for serving food, underscored the commitment to sustainability.

The venue was adorned with mango and coconut leaves, known for their minimal water requirements, while the couple's garlands were exclusively fashioned from flowers and cotton threads, devoid of plastic elements. Dr Bhat emphasised, "Our mandap was repurposed for cow feed post-celebration, and we avoided single-use cups and plates. Decorations featured mango and coconut leaves, requiring minimal water for growth. Our waste was composted on-site, and gifts were presented in jute bags. Hand wash water was directed to trees, ensuring minimal environmental impact."

She added, "We aimed to unite with Mother Earth, and I'm delighted to say the venue was pristine by evening, reflectng our commitment to sustainability."
