Two mobile phones recovered from prison inmate's rectum

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: A 26-year-old undertrial prisoner o f P a r a p p a n a Agrahara Central Prison was caught attempting to smuggle two mobile phones in his rectum. The officials have launched a probe to ascertain if there were any security lapses in the incident.

Usage of mobile phones has become a major security concern for authorities at Parappana Agrahara prison as these give hardcore criminals including gangsters and drug smugglers, access to the outside world allowing them to operate their networks freely even while sitting behind bars.

According to sources, the matter came to light when the accused, Raghuveer, complained of severe stomach ache to police officials.

He had been taken to a court for hearing by a team of cops and was brought back to the prison. When the inspection team checked Raghuveer, they found the presence of a device in his body cavity. The accused was subjected to a medical examination following which two mobile phones were recovered from his anus.

The Superintendent of prison, Mallikarjuna B, filed a complaint with the jurisdictional police and sought immediate probe to ascertain lapses on the part of the escort police team.

Meanwhile, the police have registered an FIR charging Raghuveer under Section 42 of The Karnataka Prisons (Amendment) (penalty for introduction or removal of prohibited articles into or from prison and communication with prisoners), and Section 323 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (dishonest or fraudulent removal or concealment of property).

Despite the presence of network jammers in the prison, the usage of mobile phones continues. However, residents around the area have been complaining of inconvenience due to weak signals.
