Harris, a better challenger for Trump
With Joe Biden having withdrawn from the race seeking a second term for the White House, reigning vice president Kamala Harris has announced her candidature for being Biden's successor and the Democratic Party's nominee.
She is currently the frontrunner in the Democratic Party which will be holding its national convention in August to pick up its official nominee for the contest against the redoubtable Donald Trump who has already won the Republican Party's endorsement.
The road ahead for Kamala Harris is uncertain though her antecedents for the top post are impeccable. Besides Biden, Clintons and her fellow Californian Gavin Newsom have endorsed her nomination.
These do improve her ratings, but there are other potential challengers such as Senator Joe Machin, senator from West Virginia and Mariane Williamson. It is after great persuasion that Joe Biden could be prevailed upon to quit the race following his dismal performance in the national debate on June 27.
Kamala's ascent to the position where she stands as of now as the first black woman with Asian-African ancestry, seeking White House occupancy, is unique. She would bring to the contest immense prosecutorial experience having been Attorney General of California.
She has never lost an election including her Senate run in 2017. These should stand her in good stead in scrutinising her formidable rival former President Trump, in the race. She is well-known for grilling Trump's judicial nominees while being in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Whille her 2020 campaign as the running mate for Joe Biden was beset with disorganisation, her skill as a debater are formidable. Having held the key portfolio of immigration, assigned to her by Biden, she was criticised for ineffectively addressing the issue.
However, she won plaudits for tackling the abortion issue after the Supreme Court had overturned the Roe vs. Wade ruling that had legalised abortion for decade.
However, Harris has limited time at her disposal. If she wins the Democratic nomination, she may prove a better challenger to Trump than Biden who was tied down by advanced age and failing memory.
