QR code-based smart electronic ticketing machine to be launched on 150 KSRTC buses
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation is set to introduce 'Smart Electronic Ticketing Machines' that scan QR codes and issue tickets on a trial basis on 150 buses. Following an evaluation of the trial, all bus conductors will be equipped with SETMs.
While the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) and some BMTC routes already utilise Unified Payment Interface (UPI) technology for ticket payments, it is not yet integrated into a smart electronic ticketing system.
Currently, conductors wear QR codes around their necks, and passengers scan and pay to receive their tickets. The new KSRTC system will incorporate QR code technology directly into the ticket machines. Starting next week, the SETMs will be tested on 150 KSRTC buses, including premium, regular, express, and city buses.
The trial will assess potential issues, particularly with 'Shakti' scheme passengers. The machines will also be tested for technical issues when accepting cash payments. Once any problems are resolved, SETMs will be rolled out across all buses.
"Implementing the SETM system will promote a cashless environment. Since using UPI is now common everywhere, this payment method will not be new to people. When introduced in KSRTC, most passengers will likely use UPI for payments," stated Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy
