BBMP teachers protest for dues, reinstatement of sacked staff
Teachers employed by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) staged a protest at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on Tuesday, demanding that their salary dues be cleared and those allegedly dismissed summarily, be reinstated. The teachers said they had been consistently showing up for work but weren’t being paid. They added that they hadn’t been paid for four months. The educators said that they were generally paid around Rs 4,000 but after the Provident Fund (PF) was deducted, they were barely left with Rs 2,500.
Others claimed that they were summarily dismissed without giving any appropriate reason. They added that the mistreatment meted out by the BBMP had left them reeling under mental distress. Speaking to News Trail, Vijayalakshmi S, who had been teaching for 15 years said: “I have dedicated years to teaching but now I cannot even manage my household expenses. It feels like our efforts are being taken for granted.” Another teacher, Shankar Rao, echoed these sentiments. “I have not been paid for three months, and my colleagues are being dismissed without any justification. We have families to care for.
How are we supposed to survive like this?” he asked. Sacked educators unhappy A protester, Ramya G said that she had been employed as a teacher by the BBMP but dismissed summarily. “It is devastating. I was told I would be removed without any clear reason. I have spent my life teaching, and now I am left without a job or income,” she said. Mohan B, another teacher at a school under BBMP, said: “The uncertainty is overwhelming.
Even those of us who still have jobs are unsure how long they’ll last. Every day, we hear about more teachers being told to quit.” The protesters called for an immediate intervention by BBMP to address payment delays and halt unjust dismissals. Anita R, a senior teacher, said: “We need urgent relief. It is impossible to focus on teaching.''
