Concerns arise over tree removal on Sankey Road amid development plans
NT Correspondent Bengaluru: Recent tree removals along Sankey Road, particularly near Cauvery Theater in the city have raised significant concerns among residents. Thick, old trees were cut down, purportedly with permission from the Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF). However, local residents question the legitimacy of this authorisation, noting that a tree expert committee should have been established as per guidelines set in April 2019. “The trees seemed healthy, yet we were told they were old and dry,” remarked Kimsuka, co-founder of Citizens for Sankey.
The removal coincides with the construction of a large commercial complex by a realtor, which many fear will exacerbate traffic issues in the area. Critics argue that a comprehensive environmental assessment should precede such projects to mitigate the impact on local ecology. Residents express their frustration, insisting that public consultations are vital. “It is our responsibility and duty as residents and citizens to voice our concerns,” Kimsuka added. One tree, notable for its robust trunk and extensive canopy, has been lost in this process. The lack of transparency and community engagement in these decisions has sparked a wider conversation about environmental stewardship and urban development in Bengaluru. Dattatraya Devare Petitioner in Tree Act PIL said, “Residents must be consulted before any tree removals, especially given the heavy destruction we've witnessed.''
