The counselling process for admission to Post Graduate (PG) Medical courses in Karnataka will begin today. This year, 500 additional seats have been introduced, bringing the total number of seats to 6,310. These include 2,428 All-India Quota seats, 1,822 State quota seats, 1,266 private quota seats, and 794 other quota seats as per reports. In addition to the seat increase, the Medical Education Department has announced a 10% hike in the fees for PG medical seats in private colleges. The fee for government quota seats in private medical colleges will rise from Rs 6,98,280 to Rs 7,68,108 for the 2024-25 academic year.
For private quota seats, the fee will increase from Rs 12,48,176 to Rs 13,72,997. Earlier this year, the state government also approved a similar 10 per cent fee increase for undergraduate medical seats. Furthermore, Karnataka maintains a 25 per cent government quota in deemed to- be medical universities as per reports. Dr. B.L. Sujatha Rathod, Director of Directorate of Medical Education, explained, "On the request of medical colleges, the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved the increase in PG seats.
Additionally, an agreement with private medical colleges has led to the 10 per cent fee hike for PG medical courses, reflecting the earlier fee increase for undergraduate courses." Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court has granted temporary relief to 335 doctors, exempting them from participating in the counselling process.
