Citing the meteoric rise in pet adoptions corresponding to the rapid expansion of the city, Revenue Minister Krishna Byregowda assured on Wednesday that land for animal crematoriums in all four corners of Bengaluru will be identified. This announcement follows a request made by Shivajinagar MLA Rizwan Arshad at the Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi, where the winter session is currently taking place. “Almost every family in the city is adopting pet animals. However, after their demise, owners often don't have a space to respectfully say their final goodbyes or cremate their pets.
We have been informed that two land parcels have been identified, but this process needs to be expedited,” Arshad requested Speaker U.T. Khader. Currently, the Sumanahalli electrical crematorium is the only animal crematorium in the city. Acknowledging the issue, Byregowda highlighted that pets that have been companions for up to 15 years are often discarded in drains after their sad demise. “I have requested officials from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to identify land parcels in all four corners of the city for crematoriums.
However, objections arise when land is designated for such projects,” Byregowda told the Speaker. Byregowda later proposed a plan to the Speaker, suggesting that the BBMP coordinate with the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AHVS) department to identify land for crematoriums under the latter’s jurisdiction.
