Karnataka weather: IMD predicts heavy rains in south, intense heatwave in north

Bengaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted varied weather patterns across Karnataka in the coming days. Bengaluru and the southern regions of Karnataka are anticipated to experience heavy pre-monsoon rainfall, while the northern parts of the state are likely to endure an intense heatwave. This mixed weather forecast brings both relief and challenges for the local population, according to reports.

Bengaluru and southern Karnataka are projected to receive 30-40 per cent more pre-monsoon rainfall than the average, providing much-needed respite following an unusually hot February. The increased rainfall will help regulate daytime temperatures in Bengaluru and surrounding areas. However, the urban heat island effect may still result in certain densely populated areas of the city feeling warmer than usual. The coastal and Malnad regions will experience even higher rainfall, with predictions indicating a 50-60 per cent increase from the average, further contributing to cooler conditions.

In contrast, northern Karnataka is preparing for an intense heatwave, with temperatures expected to soar as high as 43 to 45 degrees Celsius in March. The IMD has issued a heatwave warning for the northeastern districts, urging residents to take necessary precautions. The state’s Health and Family Welfare Department has advised people to stay well-hydrated, wear full-sleeved clothing for sun protection, and avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours to minimise the risk of heat-related illnesses.
