HSR LAYOUT’S civic woes a growing CHALLENGE for RESIDENTS
NT Correspondent Bengaluru HSR Layout, one of Bengaluru’s most sought-after residential and commercial hubs, falls under BBMP Ward 174. Known for its well-planned infrastructure, wide roads, and bustling commercial establishments, the area is often perceived as an upscale locality. However, despite its modern appeal, residents face several civic challenges that hinder daily life.
The problem at hand: One of the most pressing concerns in HSR Layout is the persistent garbage menace. Heaps of waste accumulate on street corners, vacant plots, and even under flyovers. Despite the presence of waste collection services, improper disposal and irregular garbage collection continue to plague the ward. “We have repeatedly voiced concerns about the inefficiency of the waste management system, urging the BBMP to implement stricter monitoring and penalties for violators,” said a resident, adding that even when BBMP representatives clean the area, people return to dump garbage.
HSR Layout also faces significant issues with its storm-water drainage system. Several drains remain clogged, broken, or poorly maintained, leading to water stagnation during the rainy season. This increases the risk of flooding and creates a breeding ground for mosquitoes, raising health concerns for residents. “Many stretches of roads have open or damaged drains, posing a safety hazard for pedestrians and motorists alike. While the major roads are well maintained, internal streets are in a deplorable state,” said Ramkumar, an auto driver.
The toll on residents: Another glaring issue is the unchecked garbage accumulation under flyovers and overpasses. These spaces, often neglected by civic authorities, have turned into dumping grounds. The lack of timely cleaning and monitoring has led to foul odours and an unhygienic environment, creating discomfort for commuters and nearby residents. Despite being a prominent locality, HSR Layout struggles with the availability of clean and functional public toilets.
The few that exist are either poorly maintained or inaccessible to the general public. “A public toilet is a basic necessity, and even that is not available in this area. What is the point of having so many fancy places but not one clean toilet?” said Sahas, a delivery executive. For pedestrians, navigating HSR Layout is a daily challenge. Many roads lack proper footpaths, forcing people to walk on the main roads amid heavy traffic. The situation is worsened by rampant on-road parking, which encroaches on pedestrian spaces, leaving little room for safe walking. Residents have long demanded better footpath infrastructure and stricter enforcement against illegal parking.
A call for action While HSR Layout continues to develop rapidly, the persistence of these civic issues highlights the urgent need for BBMP’s intervention. Addressing these concerns will be crucial in ensuring that the locality remains liveable and maintains its reputation as one of Bengaluru’s prime residential hubs.
