BMRCL official duped of Rs 3 lakh

An unidentified cybercriminal allegedly duped a Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) official of Rs 3 lakh.

The incident came to light on March 3, when a BMRCL official (Operation and Maintenance) Vyasaraj N.R received an email bearing the name of BMRCL Managing Director, Anjum Parwez. The email requested him to share his contact number linked with WhatsApp account. An unsuspecting Vyasaraj shared his contact number.

In his complaint to the Cyber, Economic and Narcotics (CEN) police department recently, the victim stated that he received a link on his WhatsApp number which compelled him to pay Rs 3 lakh towards claiming a bumper gift voucher. Believing it to be true, the official paid the amount to a bank account named ‘Indian Covid Fund Raising.’

However only when the official discussed the same with BMRCL Head did he realise that he had been cheated. Last year, one of the Social Media accounts of BMRCL MD Anjum Parwez was hacked by some unidentified perpetrators. Meanwhile CEN police have taken up a case regarding the incident and investigations are underway to nab the fraudster.
