An aged couple was attacked and robbed by a known person in broad daylight on Saturday, but their neighbours came to their rescue and nabbed the culprit, who was later handed over to the jurisdictional CK Achukattu police.

The police have identified the aged couple as Ramanujachar, 65, and his wife Lakshmi, 63, residing on the third floor of an apartment complex on the 6th cross, 2nd main in Kaveri Nagar of Banashankari 3rd stage.

The couple had identified the accused as Shanmugam, a resident of New Sapthagiri Layout in Uttarahalli. After he was handed over to the police, nearly 70 grams of gold ornaments was recovered. He had robbed Lakshmi’s two gold bangles and a mangalasutra.

“On the day of the robbery, when he had come, Lakshmi was alone at home. Since she knew him, the accused had an easy entry. The accused, who had planned the robbery, attacked her with a deadly weapon. He managed to remove the gold bangles and mangalasutra from the aged woman. Her husband who returned home after buying fruits was also attacked,” said a police officer.

Despite being attacked, Ramanujachar tried to hold on to the accused. Shanmugam too got hurt while trying to push the victim. On hearing the screams, the other apartment residents came to their rescue. They chased and caught hold of the accused and handed him to the police.
