Residents in Frazer Town’s Pulikeshi Nagar and Mosque Road have been up in arms lately against a commercial party hall that has come up in the middle of a residential street. As the establishment offers no parking facilities on their premises, visitors park on the street, outside the houses. The road is a narrow one, twelve-feet wide at one end and twenty-feet at the other, resulting in traffic jams.
With the BBMP clamping down on commercial establishments that operate out of residential areas, the people of Frazer Town were quick to join the fray, asking for the party hall to be closed. “This is a long-term nuisance for residents in terms of noise pollution, parking, garbage menace and security issues too, with strangers lingering here late into the night,” says Nikath, a member of the Frazer Town Residential Welfare Association.
The Palike has issued a notice saying that it will take action against such establishments, calling them unauthorised. They obstruct the flow of traffic and create problems for residents, the notice says. Frazer Town residents have raised a complaint with the BBMP in keeping with the notice and also with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, asking them to act against the party hall. They were disappointed with the response.
“We have little infants, children, senior citizens, working people and also people who have health issues living in this locality. This is going to affect everyone’s sleep, health and a whole lot of other things. It is a cause for mental trauma and distress which can lead to physical health issues. What if an ambulance, Hoysala van or fire truck needs to enter the road and it is blocked because there’s a function happening in the hall? We have requested the civic body but nothing has come of it,” Nikath added.
