Bengaluru: After a gap of over five months, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) authorities are likely to allow heavy vehicles, such as buses, trucks, and others, on the Goraguntepalya flyover (Peenya flyover). However, multi-axle trucks carrying heavy loads will not be allowed.
According to sources, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) experts who had primarily inspected and carried out various load testing over the bridge have recently submitted a report to the NHAI.
The authorities had formed a panel of experts to discuss the pros and cons of allowing the vehicles on the flyover, sources said.
Expressing his opinion on the matter, IISc expert Chandra Kishan said that multi-wheeled vehicles should not be allowed on the bridge.
“Two cables must be additionally installed between every pillar as a precautionary measure before allowing multi-wheeled vehicles to use the flyover,” he said.
“The cables must be inspected on a daily basis,” he added.
If the NHAI accepts the report, the bridge will be open for all types of vehicles including buses and trucks. However, arrangements to allow multi-wheeled vehicles will take another nine months, sources said.
“The decision will be announced by the authorities within 15 days,” the officials said.
The NHAI closed Peenya elevated highway on December 25 after they discovered that two cables had rusted at the Peenya 8th Mile of the stretch during an inspection.
The flyover which connects 18 districts of Karnataka is considered one of the busiest thoroughfares in Bengaluru. During this period, traffic was thrown out of gear with motorists forced to spend hours stuck in traffic on the busy Tumakuru Road.
After nearly 50 days, the authorities allowed light motor vehicles to ply on the flyover after experts from the IISc who were conducting load testing, gave the green signal.
