Demanding that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) retain the Eidgah Maidan as its property, several right-wing organisations, along with the Chamarajpet Citizens’ Forum, have called for a ‘Chamrajpet Bandh’ on July 12.
Around 50 organisations, including Hindu Janajagruthi Samithi, Vishwa Sanathana Parishad, Sri Rama Sene and Bajrang Dal, will support the bandh. The activists have requested the traders and merchants in the constituency not to open their shops and stores during the day.Leaflets were also distributed around the area to request support from the public, sources said.
“It will be a voluntary bandh and no rallies will be organised on Tuesday. A peaceful protest will be held from 8am to 5pm to pressurise the state government,” an activist told News Trail. “The next step will be taken after observing the government’s move,” he added.
Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra said he has instructed the top police officials to ensure law and order during the bandh. “Heavy security will be deployed around Chamarajpet under the direction of the City Commissioner of Police,” he said.
The controversy over Eidgah Maidan, which began after a statement from the BBMP Chief Tushar Girinath in the first week of June, picked up heat after a group of Hindu activists demanded that the Maidan should be made accessible for all religious events.
