The Breakthrough Science Society has condemned the recommendations of a position paper submitted by Karnataka government on primary and secondary education that had stated that Pythagoras theorem and the story of an apple falling on Isaac Newton were fake news.

In a statement, the non-profit social welfare organization said, “Newton did not discover gravity just because an apple fell on his head. The discovery resulted from serious research based on a long chain of incremental advancements, the most important of which was Galileo’s work.

Newton’s discovery of the universal Law of Gravitation is not ‘fake news’.” BSS has urged the scientific community to reject the recommendations made by the paper. It also said this is an attempt to distort facts.

“The present document attempts to mix science with mysticism and history with mythology. It seeks to destroy scientific temper and a rational outlook and propagate unscientific superstitious beliefs in the name of science,” the society said. Many other activists and organizations have also criticised the position paper for being illogical and unscientific.
