Amid heavy police deployment, the national flag was hoisted for the first time at the Chamrajpet Eidgah Maidan on the Independence Day.
During the event, the tricolour was hoisted by the Assistant Commissioner, Bengaluru South Urban, M.G. Shivanna, in presence of Member of Parliament P.C. Mohan, Chamarajpet MLA B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan, Additional Commissioner of Police, West, Sandeep Patil, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Laxman B Nimbargi and other state officials.
Following the flag hoisting and singing of the national anthem, several cultural programmes were held which were performed by the students of Chamarajpet Government School. A day before the event, Revenue Minister R Ashoka had visited the place to take stock of the security arrangements across the Maidan. Police Personnel from Rapid Action Force (RAF), City Armed Reserve (CAR), and Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) had been deployed to avoid any untoward incident during the Independence Day celebration.
After a heated debate between several organisations over hoisting the national flag on Eidgah Maidan, the state government had ruled that an official of the Revenue Department with a rank of Assistant Commissioner can do the flag hoisting on Independence Day.
Recently, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had dismissed the petition filed by the Karnataka State Waqf Board for the ownership of the Eidgah Maidan and had declared the Karnataka Revenue Department to be the default owner of the property
