Bengaluru West Division police have arrested a person for peddling marijuana while posing as a railway employee in the city.

The police identified the accused as Mohammed Ashwaq, hailing from Hubbali. He used to procure the contraband from Assam and bring it to the city by train.

A senior official from the Upparpet police station told News Trail that the arrest was made following credible information received by the police regarding a person posing as a railway employee and peddling drugs.

“A team of officials were keeping a close watch on the passengers coming from Assam, especially the ones moving around suspiciously,” the officer added. The police grew suspicious on seeing a person waiting for someone outside the Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna railway station.

As per the police, he had a bag in his possession and when the officers confronted and checked him, they found eight kilograms of marijuana in his bag.

The police further said that the accused confessed to the crime during interrogation and they also seized a fake railway ID card from him.

“The accused had created a fake ID to move around easily in the AC coaches carrying the drug packets concealed in secret places under the bogies on the pretext of checking and cleaning the coaches,” the senior official said.

A detailed investigation by the team revealed that the accused had married twice, one in Gadag and the other in Assam.

The police have also expressed suspicion about the involvement of several railway staff in helping him carry out illegal activities. Further investigation is underway
