Nine-year-old pens a memoir on grandmother’s recipes

Bengaluru: During the lockdown, Aaryan Vittal spent a lot of time with his grandparents, and hearing stories of his grandmother inspired him to write Aachi Thatha’s Kitchen in which he details his memories associated with recipes he has learned from his grandparents and food he has discovered while travelling.

He will be discussing this with Commonwealth Award winning author Archana Mohan at Paperback Bookshop this Sunday. A student of Ekya School in JP Nagar, he started writing the book in August this year while being mentored by the Bookosmia Sprouts program and it took him just 8 weeks to write his debut novel.

Speaking about what his favourite recipes are, he says, “I’ve written about kozhukattai, which is my favourite sweet at every festival and I have also written a poem about curd rice. I plan to write more about the vacations we have taken as a family in the future.”

“All the recipes he has written about are family favourites. He has also written about Moonlight Dinner where my grandmother used to serve Sambar and Rice under the star that was made with local vegetables but he has adapted it to the vegetables that are available now,” says Geetha Govindan, the proud mother of the budding author. If you would like to know more about his story and buy his book, you can head on over to Paperback Bookshop in JP Nagar.
