Bengaluru: The Institute of Social Responsibility Cell (ISRC) of BMSCE has started a unique initiative called “Eco Pranaya” which encourages students, staff and the faculty of the College to use eco-friendly transport options like Bicycles, electric bikes /cars or the new BMTCE - Buses to commute.
This initiative began in the month of November and is carried out on the first working day of every month. “ Initially I was able to see only about ten to fifteen bicycles being used to commute to college but slowly more students have started using cycles and other eco-friendly vehicles,” said Sujatha, the faculty co-ordinator of the BMSCE.
She is the head of the Social Responsibility Cell and came up with the term “Eco Pranaya” along with Surya, a student from the college. They used posters as a means of educating students and other staff members about how using such modes of transport can be an environment friendly choice and this information was also conveyed digitally through different Whatsapp groups and the internal mail Ids of the College.
“What inspired me to promote Eco Pranaya is what I saw at the BMTC Bus day. They had discussed a similar approach and I thought that implementing it in our College will largely help in reducing the carbon footprint and create awareness about the problem of pollution.”
Sujatha explained. Additionally, class to class campaigns were also organized within the college to motivate students to be a part of the initiative and a separate section was reserved outside the campus in order to allow students to park these vehicles and further promote the cause.
“It is our social responsibility to reduce pollution and by creating such campaigns we can help students be a part of a bigger cause. I also believe that cycles are a healthier alternative to other vehicles and can actively help students in their everyday life,” Dr S Murlidhara, principal of BMSCE informed.
