Siddu asks govt to vet the advocates’ bill

Belagavi: Leader of the Opposition (LOP) i n the Assembly Siddarmaiah demanded on the f loor of the House that the draft bill prepared by the advocates’ association pertaining lawyers’ security bevetted by the state government.

“The draft bill pre - pared by the senior lawyers of the BAR council should be reviewed and implemented to provide protection to the state’s advocates,” Siddaramaiah said. He a lso pointed out that lawyers had staged a protest demanding implementation of the bill near Suvarna Vidhana Soudha as the winter session was underway.

“Bengaluru BAR association council’s senior advocates had prepared a draft bill to protect themselves from harassment and as - saults,” he said. He added that it was a p osit ive development that Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and State Law Minister JC Madhuswamy but they needed to heed the demands of advocates.

“Senior lawyers Holl a, Hanumantharaya and Ponnanna prepared a draft bill. Lawyers argue on behalf of clients to pursue justice. In doing so, they make enemies. If such people are left with out protection , then it’ll become difficult to pursue justice freely,” Siddaramaiah said.

“Lawyers from al l over the state have come to Belagavi. They have themselves prepared a bill. The law department should analyse it and if found adequate, I would urge the State government to implement the bill and enact a law,” he concluded.
