‘Black day for Indian cinema’
NT Correspondent
For a democracy to function , power shouldn’t be concentrated in the hands of a few. But that is precisely what is happening with the Film Division of India, the National Film Archive of India and the Directorate of Film Festivals being merged with the National Film Development Corporation, which was announced in March and was condemned by many people from the film industry.
The Films Division of India (FDI) was established in 1948 following the independence of India. It was the first state film production and distribution unit under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, with its primary intent being to “produce documentaries and news magazines for publicity of Government programs” and the cinematic record of Indian history. A social media post shared by filmmaker Anurag Kashyap announced it as a black day for Indian Cinema.
