Bengaluru: Mr S Subbaraman who conserved various priceless monuments and temples across the globe, has been selected for the prestigious Padmashree award by the Government of India in recognition of his efforts for the conservation of historic relics
This reporter had written about the achievements of Subbaraman who hails from Kollegal taluk in the present Chamarajanagar district. He has renovated relics from the famed Bamiyan Buddha in Afghanistan to the Ajanta Caves.
In the 1970s, Subbaraman and his team had gone to Afghanistan on the invitation of the then government to conserve the Bamiyan Buddha relics and conserved the statue for almost two years. As chief conservationist, Subbaraman has saved scores of temples across the country which had not been cleaned for several centuries, and gave a new lease of life to them.
When News Trail sought his reaction to the award, Subbaraman said he received a call on Wednesday morning from the Union Home Ministry regarding the selection. “ I don’t know who had sponsored me for this prestigious award? Did you? I would like to dedicate the award to my gurus who taught me this job from scratch”.
