Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has banned the slaughter and sale of meat in the city limits and rural areas that fall under its jurisdiction on January 30, the Martyrs’ Day. “In view of Sarvodaya Day, slaughtering and sale of meat in slaughterhouses under BBMP limits are banned on Monday, January, 30,” the circular by the BBMP reads.

The BBMP had imposed a similar ban last year. Martyrs’ Day is observed on January 30 in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi, who was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. It is also observed on March 23, in remembrance of Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar.

On Friday, the BBMP ordered the closing of meat stalls and non-vegetarian restaurants from January 30 till February 20, in view of the Aero India show within 10 km of the Yelahanka Air Force Station. The Aero India show is set to take place from February 13 to 17.

“It is to the notice of the general public and proprietors of meat stalls, non-vegetarian hotels and restaurants for closure of all meat/ chicken/fish shops and prohibition of serving/ sale of non-vegetarian dishes within a 10 km radius of Air Force Station, Yelahanka from January 30 to February 20,” the civic agency said in a notice. Any violation of the circular will attract punishment under the BBMP Act-2020 and rule 91 of the Indian Aircraft Rules 1937, it added.

According to the municipal body, the decision was taken as non-vegetarian food when littered in public spaces attracts scavenger birds such as kites, which can cause mid-air accidents.
