Bengaluru: Though the number of deaths due to accidents is increasing with every passing year, the Government Railway Police(GRP) struggle to solve the piling up of unnatural death (UD) cases as they have no details of the deceased persons, sources from the GRP informed.
Dr. Soumyalatha S K, Superintendent of Police, Railways (SP-GRP) said that the cops have been probing the DNA samples, fingerprints, and CCTV footage of the incidents to identify several bodies.
However, in certain cases, there are no records of missing persons due to which the police are finding it difficult to identify the persons who died accidentally or have committed suicide on the tracks.
The sources added that despite the GRP traveling across various police stations across the state in order to ascertain the identities of the deceased persons, a huge number of cases remain unsolved due to a lack of information. A senior official said that the railway police have 1074 unsolved death cases which have been pending for the last three years.
As per the Railway Protection Force (RPF), in 2022, 1674 people died on the tracks, out of which 451 deaths were not recorded due to various reasons. At least 244 cases registered in 2020 and 379 cases in 2021 still remain unsolved, the sources added.
