Citizens outraged over plan to demolish Indira Canteen

Bengaluru: The KC General Hospital in Malleswaram has decided to demolish the Indira Canteen within its premises for more space to operate from. However, the decision has received heavy backlash as attendants of patients among others use the canteen for their daily meals.
This particular branch of Indira Canteen mainly has students, dailywage labourers and attendants of patients as its customers. Despite the initiative being of much use to those in dire need, the management board of the KC General Hospital has instructed the staff in the canteen to vacate the space and are adamant about demolishing and expanding the hospital in the particular patch of land.
However, the board has said that they will compensate for the loss by introducing mobile canteens elsewhere in the vicinity of the hospital. Citizens have expressed outrage over the issue as they find the current location very suitable since it is in an open space.
“They have asked us to shift to a much smaller mobile canteen near the hospital gate and have given instructions to vacate the canteen. The facility was very beneficial to patients and once the space is cleared, we will shift the canteen,” said Nagaraj, a staff at the Indira Canteen. Pushpa, a regular customer, said that since breakfast is available at Rs 5 and lunch at only Rs 10, it benefits the working poor.
