Bengaluru: Bengaluru, popularly known as the "Silicon Valley of India," is not only a centre for innovation and technology but also a city of voracious readers.
As a variety of genres pique the attention of its active community of readers, the city's reading scene is now experiencing a fascinating shift. Romance is a genre that is becoming increasingly popular among Bengaluru's young readers.
Books on politics, spirituality, and philosophy have been flying off the shelves.
"The new generation has recently shown an interest in reading Mangas and internationally renowned authors have seen a rise in demand", say local booksellers. Bengaluru readers are drawn to these fantastical stories because they provide escape and inspire reflection on the future's potential. In addition to romance novels, Bengaluru's readers have shown a keen interest in contemporary Indian literature as well as Queer literature. Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in the representation of LGBTQ+ characters and stories in literature.
"This representation has helped to create more visibility and awareness of queer experiences", observes a famous bookstore owner in Church Street.
Young people, including those in Bengaluru, are now more likely to encounter and engage with queer narratives, leading to an increased interest in reading queer books.
The memoir ‘From Manjunath to Manjamma: The Inspiring Life of a Transgender Folk Artist’ has sold over 100+ copies this month according to store owners. Indian authors' stories showcase cultural diversity, playing a significant role in promoting authentic stories.
A notable trend in Bengaluru's reading scene is the rise of non-fiction genres, particularly biographies, as well as books offering practical advice on mental health and holistic well-being.
This trend highlights the need for urban residents to prioritise their well-being. Readers in Bengaluru play a crucial role in shaping reading trends, particularly physical books.
The city's vibrant book clubs and communities continue to appreciate the tactile experience, with local independent bookstores experiencing steady demand for print editions.
