Number of poor in Bengaluru dips; stands at 1.47%: Data Ben

Bengaluru: The latest report from the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) revealed that the poor in the city have come down to 1.47% from 2.05%.

With this, the city secured a place in the third lowest number of poor people in the state. In particular, the report also stated that Ramanagar in the city recorded the lowest poverty index with a mere 0.88% of the poor people, followed by Bengaluru Rural with 0.99%.

However, Yadgir district accounts for the higher number of poor people in the state with a percentage of 25.38. The MPI also monitors the poverty index, which includes access to education and healthy living standards, sanitation, electricity, etc.

It revealed that poverty in the country fell from 55% in 2005- 06 to 16% in 2019-21. Further, it said people who are multidimensionally poor and deprived under the nutrition indicator declined from 44% in 2005-06 to 12% in 2019-21.

Access to drinking water fell from 16% to 3%, while the percentage of access to electricity stands at 2% from 29%. In addition, the report also says that children under 18 years old account for half of MPI poor people. However, the disparities across the rural and urban areas continue.
