Bengaluru: As if potholes weren’t enough, the roads have also started caving in some parts of the city.
A huge part of Jaya Chamarajendra (JC) road in Bengaluru caved in on Thursday, sparking a panic among motorists and nearby shopkeepers. Traffic police had a hard time clearing the traffic on this ever-busy road, until the BBMP officials arrived to inspect and repair the sinkhole.
Videos and photos of the damaged road were widely shared on social media. In some of the photos, a man, supposedly a BBMP worker, can be seen standing inside the sinkhole.
Speaking to News Trail, BBMP Chief Engineer (Road and Infrastructure) B.S. Prahlad said, “While we are trying to ascertain the cause, we suspect that there might have been an old well under the area which has collapsed. We even found a damaged sewage pipeline there. It is possible that the mud underneath the road might have subsided,” he said.
Fortunately there were no reports of any accidents due to the sinkhole.
Mukram, who owns a shop opposite to Ravindra Kalakshetra said, “The road caved in late night on Wednesday and someone from the vicinity had complained about it. The officials covered the spot with barricades to alert the commuters. The BBMP officials and workers arrived in the morning and inspected the sinkhole. They ascertained the mishap as a result of a leakage in one of the damaged sewage pipes,” he said.
Earlier in September, a similar sinkhole was formed near Tannery Road due to tunnel boring operations being carried out by BMRCL.
