Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has intensified its checking of buses operated in and around Bengaluru to detect ticketless travelling by passengers.
During the month of July 2023, the BMTC checking staff checked 15,198 trips and penalised 2,953 ticketless passengers by collecting Rs 5,87,310 as penalty.
The BMTC also booked 925 cases against conductors for their dereliction of duty. In addition to checking for ticketless passengers, the BMTC checking staff also penalised 332 male passengers for occupying seats exclusively reserved for women.
These passengers were each fined Rs 100 as per KMV Rules 94 r/w Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988.
In all, the BMTC penalised 3,285 passengers during the month of July 2023 and collected Rs 6,20,510 in penalties. The BMTC advises passengers to purchase tickets or passes before travelling, as this will not only avoid the embarrassment of being penalised, but will also help the BMTC provide better services to commuters.
Passengers are also asked to allow female passengers to occupy seats reserved for them. The BMTC is committed to providing safe and reliable public transportation for the citizens of Bengaluru.
By cracking down on ticketless travel and enforcing the rules for seating, the BMTC is working to make its buses more comfortable and accessible for all passengers.
