BMRCL starts load testing on Baiyappanahalli Benniganahalli metro section

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has started load testing of the Open Web Girder (OWG) that was launched above the track of the Indian Railways between Baiyappanahalli and Benniganahalli metro stations.

The load testing is being conducted to ensure the structural stability of the OWG. For the test, a six-coach train loaded with sandbags, simulating full passenger capacity, was stationed at the OWG for around three and a half hours.

Speaking to the media, Jitendra Jha, Project Manager, Rolling Stock, BMRCL said, “We have started the load testing on the OWG near Benniganahalli from Saturday and it will continue till 19 August. The testing cycle is for seven days. We will conduct the load test by stationing two trains of six coaches on the tracks of the OWG.”

After the load testing is completed, the BMRCL will conduct signalling tests between the K.R. Pura and Baiyappanahalli metro stations. All the tests are expected to be completed by August 28.

The OWG is a crucial part of the Phase II expansion of the Metro. It will provide a link to Baiyappanahalli depot as well as the station.

The BMRCL faced several challenges in erecting the OWG, including a steep hike in steel prices. The load testing is a critical step in ensuring the safety of the OWG.

Once the load testing is completed and the signalling tests are successful, the BMRCL will be able to open the BaiyappanahalliBenniganahalli section of the Phase II expansion.

The opening of this section will provide much-needed relief to commuters in east Bengaluru. It will also help to decongest the traffic on the busy Hosur Road.
