
BBMP fire breakout: Chief engineer dies of sepsis, multiple organ failure

Bengaluru: Shivakumar (45), the Chief Engineer of BBMP, who was tragically caught in the fire outbreak at the Quality Assurance Laboratory of the civic body on August 11, has passed away.
He succumbed to "sepsis with refractory septic shock" and "multiple organ dysfunction syndrome" on Wednesday at 6:59 p.m. in a private hospital in Bengaluru.
Shivakumar leaves behind his wife, Uma Maheshwari, and his daughters, Vibha Nidhi (12) and Nirvi Neha (10). He had sustained severe injuries, including 25 percent burns, in addition to inhalation injuries.
A statement by the hospital said, “Mr. C M SHIVAKUMAR 45 Years male, came to our hospital with alleged history of accidental thermal burns and sustained burns injury to bilateral upper limbs, chest, face and neck (diagnosed as 25 % burns with inhalational injury, ARDS with Type II Respiratory Failure with high Fio2 requirement, Sepsis with septic shock). Patient took initial treatment at an outside hospital and later he was referred to our hospital in view of severe hypoxia, hypercarbia, anaemia, thrombocytopenia, sepsis with septic shock, AKI and Grade-3-4 burns injury.”
"Sad to hear the news of Chief Engineer Shivakumar's demise. A few days ago I visited the hospital and inquired about his health. Although the doctors gave good treatment, his condition was alarming. We prayed for his recovery. Our prayers did not bear fruit, said Karnataka Dy CM Shivakumar.
