Bengaluru: An FIR was registered on Monday against unidentified miscreants for creating a fake Facebook account in the name of Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot in the city.
Official sources have indicated that the Governor's Special Secretary filed a complaint with the Cybercrime police, prompting an ongoing investigation to trace the culprits behind this act.
Authorities have expressed concerns about the potential misuse of the Governor's photo and name in connection with this incident.
This incident follows closely on the heels of three individuals being apprehended for fabricating a fake website for the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) to disseminate misleading information about the party and its leaders.
In response to a complaint filed by Shivanna, a member of the KPCC legal department's executive committee, cybercrime police successfully identified and apprehended Dharnesh Jain, the individual responsible for creating the website.
In connection with this case, cyber police conducted several raids and also arrested Jain's associates, Venkatesh and Siddarth, who were involved in the development of the website.
Shivanna, in his complaint, reported that while inspecting the KPCC's website, he discovered that unknown individuals had created a fraudulent website using the party's name and had been posting content that defamed the party and its leaders.
Over the past few years, numerous ministers, government officials, and even police officers have fallen victim to online scams.
With the increasing amount of time people spend on the internet, it has become increasingly challenging to avoid online scams unless individuals learn to practice safe browsing habits.
