50% rebate: BTP collects over Rs 8 crore

Bengaluru: The 50 per cent rebate scheme on traffic violation challans ended on Saturday, Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) said.
It was the third time in the last one year that the Karnataka government had allowed a 50 per cent discount on pending traffic e-challans that were to be paid between July 6 and September 9.
In the last two months, the scheme has managed to collect Rs 8,07,73,190 as payment of fines for over 2,53,519 traffic cases until 8 pm on Friday.
The fine collection data shared by the BTP showed that most of the people have opted to pay their fines using their personal digital assistants (PDAs).
More than 1,51,417 traffic cases have been closed with the payment of Rs 4,69,69,840 towards the challan through PDAs by the violators. Citizens have also paid their pending traffic challans by visiting Bengaluru One centres.
Through these centers, Rs 3,21,03,150 have been collected towards 96,946 pending traffic cases which have been closed. Other modes of payments chosen by the citizens include Automation centers and KSP mobile applications, through which the department has collected Rs 10,00,850 and Rs 6,99,350 respectively.
In February, when the scheme was announced, the traffic police department still had over 1 crore pending cases, despite the discount.
The Bengaluru traffic police alone collected nearly Rs 140 crore under the 50% rebate scheme. Owing to the wide response to the earlier announced rebate schemes, the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority and transport department allowed the scheme again from July 6 this year.
Violators were provided time till September 9 to settle their pending fines under 50% discount.
